Mac Catalina. The screensaver code is EXTREMELY tiny and VERY slow when actually running. It looks nothing like the preview in System Preferences.

Do you have a Retina display on your Mac? If so, your screen resolution is much higher (more pixels per inch), and the screensaver likely does not adapt to that. I'm not sure it will be updated, but you could send a message to the developer.
Alternatively, you could try the MatrixGL screensaver. I don't know if it supports Retina displays, but you could give it a try. After installing it, you may get a message saying that "macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware". Click "Cancel", then open the Security & Privacy panel in System Preferences, and click "Open Anyway" at the bottom where it says "matrixgl.saver was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer." Then return to "matrixgl" in the Screen Saver panel.
If the screensaver works, you can adjust the settings a little to make it look more like the Matrix Mania screensaver by toggling off "Show 3D images".
Let me know if you need further assistance.
