Johnny Castaway on 64-bit: Screen Launcher not working?

I tried to follow the instructions to install on 64-bit but it didn't work. when I click on the screen launcher to install it, nothing happens. And Control+c does not copy to the clipboard. is there an updated way to install Johnny Castaway? I miss it.

  • Hi Margaret, thanks for posting.

The Screen Launcher is itself a screensaver. It is not distributed with an installation program. You need to copy the Screen Launcher file you downloaded from the tutorial to the Windows folder on your hard drive, usually located at C:\Windows. You can then open the Screen Saver Settings panel and Screen Launcher should appear in the list of installed screensavers. Now you can proceed with step 5.3 of the tutorial.

If Control+C does not copy to the clipboard, perhaps you can try right-clicking your file or selection and choosing "Copy" in the context menu that appears?

Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any further assistance.

  • Where exactly do you hit a block in the road? Depending on your access rights on the computer, it may not be possible to save the "Screen Launcher.scr" file to your Windows folder directly from your web browser (or at all). You may have to save it somewhere else first, e.g. to your desktop or Documents folder, and then use the Explorer to move it to your Windows folder. It is also possible to store it somewhere else, right-click the file and choose "Install" to install the Screen Launcher.

This is a temporary installation, however, as it will disappear from the list of screensavers again once you activate a different screensaver. You would then have to right-click and "Install" the Screen Launcher file to activate it again.

Can you right-click the Screen Launcher file you downloaded, and do you then get a context menu with options like "Install", "Configure" and "Test"? What happens when you choose "Install" or "Configure"? Clicking "Test" or double-clicking the Screen Launcher file doesn't do anything yet, as the screensaver isn't set up yet.

If Control+C from step 5.3 does not work, one alternative is to write the contents of the "Target" text field down on a piece of paper, then type that into the Screen Launcher settings instead of pasting it from the clipboard, as described in step 5.4.

  • Well I followed all the instructions and the screensaver won't work. I don't know what else to say.

  • If we can pinpoint the exact step where things go wrong somehow, I may be able to find a workaround for you, but right now I'm not 100% sure what does and does not work for you on your computer. That's why I asked so many questions: I need more details to find a way to help you get Johnny up and running.

  • The code asks to enter c:\windows\scrantics.exe
After I installed the 32bit version of Johnny castaway, all I have in C:\Windows is Screen Antics.scr file. There is no scrantics.exe

The only .exe I could find was the jonnycastaway application, which is just the launcher for the installation.

Where can we find a version of Johnny Casataway screensaver that will let us end up with scrantics.exe in my windows folder?

  • If you successfully installed Johnny Castaway using the installer available here, i.e. the johnnycastaway.exe application file, you have a 32-bit version of Windows and do not need to follow the instructions in the tutorial for users of 64-bit versions of Windows.

If, after installation, Johnny Castaway is not working on your 32-bit version of Windows, please start a new post on the message board and I will try to help you out.

  • My apologies,
I am on 64 bit version of windows. After following the instructions on the link above, it wasn't clear which Johnny Castaway download I should start with.

I think I figured it out. It looks like scrantics is already included in the doxbox C:\ mountable folder.

I need to troubleshoot a bit more on my own. I'll ask again in here if I need additional help.
