Why won't my Apple Mac accept this application?

Apple OS X 10.12.6

"“Install HAL 9000 Console Screensaver” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the App Store and identified developers."

There was also a a note advising me to delete Firefox and adopt something called Opera.

What can I do about this? I really, really want the HAL 9000 screensaver.

  • Hello Richard,

Thanks for posting to the message board.

This particular issue is so common that we've dedicated a help page to it:
File can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer

Basically, you need to right-click the file you downloaded, then select "Open". This will let you click "Open" again in the warning message that you saw before.

As for the note advising you to install Opera, that was probably unrelated to this screensaver. Where did you see the note? Was it an advertisement on the site?

    Hope that helps!

  • Rob , thank you SO much. I will try this as soon as you remind me what a right-click on Apple is.

This appeared on my screen very close to the first iteration of the Apple note, either just before or just after. It wasn't there after I returned from trying to adjust my Firefox preferences. I don't think it was on the screensaver website.

  • In lieu of a right-click, you can also hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and then click the file to bring up to the context menu, where you can then click "Open".

Hard to say where the Opera note came from, perhaps some other application was responsible for that. There's no reason to replace Firefox with Opera, though.

Hope this will get the screensaver working for you.
