The Bad Apple screensaver is identified as a trojan

I used to use this screensaver all the time, what happened :(
Microsoft Defender identifies like 3 different trojans in it??
Also has like 20/72 detections on VirusTotal: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/083fee67eecbd27ec2af360c618742011c31286e0405ee1bab8283ec0666c153

  • Thanks for reporting that, Zaytri.

I believe that is a false positive, so I've reported it as such to Microsoft and a few other companies that flagged it, like Sophos and McAfee.

I'll report back when I get a response from them. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Still waiting for most of them to respond, but McAfee has confirmed it is a false positive and has now whitelisted the file. I hope Microsoft will do the same soon.

  • Microsoft has now also cleared it. The number of detections on VirusTotal has gone down from 20/72 to 11/69. Unfortunately I won't be able to get them all cleared because not all anti-virus companies have a reporting process for false alarms.

Hopefully this at least helps reassure you that the screensaver is safe to use.

  • Thank you! Hopefully Microsoft Defender will stop automatically deleting it soon. I really love this screensaver since it works on multiple monitors simultaneously and even portrait monitors, I wish more screensavers could do that.
