Thanks!

Just found https://www.screensaversplanet.com/help/message-board/windows-98-plus-science-fiction-screensaver-136 and am absolutely ecstatic. Won't be able to try it for another couple of days so can't confirm that it works for me in Win11, so I might well be back, but I just wanted to post a quick thanks first because it's not just me. Other folks have been jonesin' for this with no luck--my first search took me to https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/old-microsoft-desktop-theme-sci-fi/632dd505-53ab-4060-9bf7-71685c3f5577?page=1 which ran from 2010 to 2016 before the people involved finally gave up on this awesome screensaver. One of the posters commented that it's the best one MS ever released, and I agree. Screensavers Planet saves the day! Too late for those folks, but not for me!

Thanks again! Now let's see if it works...

  • Glad you found us! I see it's been 7 years since I posted that, and unfortunately after testing it on Windows 11 just now I couldn't immediately get it to work.

Old software can be fickle when run on modern hardware, so it's still possible that it does work for you. If not, let me know and I'll see if I can find the problem.

  • Thanks for being willing to help. RL got in the way but I installed it today and, unfortunately, it doesn't work. It shows up in the screensaver dialog as "Organic Art". Unlike the shipping screensavers, when selected the dialog preview displays only the bottom right quarter of the screensaver (displaying it at the top right corner of the preview pane). As long as I leave hardware acceleration off, I can in fact use the dialog's Preview button successfully; the screensaver will occupy my entire screen and work as expected during the preview time. It looks great! but it won't activate when its supposed to. Currently I have shipping screensaver Mystify going, so I know that screensavers in general do work on my system. It would be awesome if this one would work too. Any ideas?

  • Good news! I spoke too soon. I love it when being wrong is a positive. Apparently I needed a system reboot for the change to stick.

I do have to say that bad news may be around the corner, as this is a brand new clean-install and I made a mistake with it so will probably be re-installing Windows. Perhaps rectifying the first mistake (which disabled the laptop's touchpad) will do something to the screensaver. Who knows? But at least the potential is there for sure.
