How can I make my screensaver stay as my screensaver even after I have turned it off?

I have downloaded a screensaver but it doesnt always work after I have turned it off. Do I have to unzip it after I have placed it in the system32 folder or before?

  • The screensaver file that's within the ZIP file you downloaded should be placed in the system32 folder. There's no need to put the ZIP file in that folder, although it won't hurt either. The important thing is that screensaver file is there.

Once you've confirmed the screensaver is in the system32 folder, it will automatically appear in the Screen Saver Settings panel, because Windows searches the system32 folder for compatible screensavers every time you open that panel.

If a screensaver file is placed outside of the Windows, system32 or SysWOW64 folders, e.g. on your desktop or in your downloads folder, when you right-click it and select "Install", it will only be installed for as long as it remains the active screensaver. It will disappear from the list as soon as you've activated a different screensaver.

It won't disappear from the list if the screensaver file is in system32.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • All you have to do after you install the screensaver is go to your display in the control panel and click on the screen saver icon - once it is open make sure the screensaver you want is in the screen saver selection box - if not then click on the down arrow to display your installed screensavers and choose from the list - all screensavers that are installed will remain here until you remove them from the list - I hope this helps
