HELP! Removed screensaver but music remains and won't stop

How do I get rid of the music from the screen saver? It plays continuously after a reboot. It was one of the butterfly screensavers. I think the file name was something like buty. The first time I rebooted after I installed the screen saver, it began running and locked up my computer. I have Win 7. Help! Help!

  • Hello Pari,

That's very strange! The screensaver you linked to your post, 3D Butterfly, doesn't include any music, so maybe it was a different one. Perhaps you still have it in your Downloads folder? Because I can't find any files named like "buty".

There's a butterfly screensavers category page on the site where all of them are gathered, maybe you recognize it from the screenshots.

Are you still able to use your computer normally? If so, you should be able to find the screensaver in the Screen Saver Settings panel, or alternatively in the Programs and Features panel. Using that last link, you can find instructions on how to remove the screensaver, should you want to.

If you find the name of the screensaver, please report back and I'll look into it!

  • Thank you Rob. Yes, I can use computer. Its not in my Screen Savers panel. I think it got deleted it but not the music part. I don't have a downloads folder. So which butterfly screen saver do you have that has music? It like bubbling water.

  • Most of those butterly screensavers have sound effects, but I don't know them all by heart, I'm afraid. You did download this screensaver from Screensavers Planet, right? Can you check your browser history to see which pages you visited?

  • Ok I checked. I did a lot of viewing on your site and visited a lot of pages. Do you have a preview where it plays the music for the ss?

  • Me again. Does bfly102s have sound?

    Pari5 years ago

  • Some screensavers do have a preview video, but there's usually no sound included. The bfly102s.exe (Butterflies) screensaver does not have sounds either.

When you reboot your computer, the music plays automatically and continues playing? The screensaver itself does not start (i.e. fill the screen with an animation)?

I can't think of a mechanism that would result in that behavior. Very strange.

  • Correct....just sound, no screen saver. That part must have deleted but not the sound?? I think that I don't get the sound if I completely turn it off, then back on. It happens on Restart. I'm afraid to test that. The water sounds did quit after a few hours yesterday....I had muted the Sound, then tried a few hours later. I hate to have to take this in to a tech. I ran MalWare bits and nothing showed up.

  • Hello Pari,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

If it does not happen when you power off your computer and and then power it on again, I would recommend trying the restart again. I understand you would be reluctant to do that, but the problem may have been a one-time fluke.

  • Sorry this reply took a while. I wanted to wait 'til the end of the day before trying a Restart. I just did, and no sound like last time. I got to thinking, maybe its my current screensaver, At the Depths. The sound is turned off, but the bubble noise came through anyway last time I restarted?? What do you think? Meanwhile, I LOVE the 3D fish. I often sit and just watch them. It like having a real aquarium.

  • I think you cracked it!

I just installed the At the Depth screensaver, then restarted my computer. The bubble sound didn't start automatically, but once I manually ran the screensaver, then pressed the Esc key to exit, the screensaver never really quit so the sound kept playing.

When it's still running in the background like that, a fish icon should be visible in your task bar (at the bottom of your screen where all active windows are a click away). To close it, you can simply right-click that icon and select "Close".

It only happened one time so far, but I think I've seen this behavior more often in screensavers from this developer. There likely won't be any updates to the At the Depth screensaver, so it's just a little fluke we have to live with.

So shutting it down may take a few extra clicks sometimes, but if you really enjoy this aquarium screensaver then hopefully that won't be a problem :-)

You can optionally disable sounds via the screensaver's settings menu, if you like.

    Thanks for reporting back!

  • Thank you, Rob. Glad we figured it out. So that makes sense, then, especially if you've seen this before. I'll use your suggestions if it happens again. I did disable the sound before it went weird on me, but it just had a mind of its own. Oh well, such is the way it is in the 'puter world, right?

  • Unfortunately, yes. If only things just worked the same everywhere & everytime!

Anyway, enjoy the screensaver & thanks for visiting!
