Can't delete a screen saver

Went to /system/library but was not able to drag a screen saver to the trash. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John

  • Hello John,

You can only delete files in your own user account space, e.g. in /Users/John. Files belonging to macOS are placed in the /system folder and those cannot be removed by a user. This is part of what Apple calls its System Integrity Protection.

There are complicated workarounds available that give you full access to your system, but it's generally not recommended to delete any system files.

Are you trying to remove the screensaver because it's causing trouble?

  • Well, it has album artwork on it and I don't use iTunes anymore so there is no music for it to go to. Thanks, John

  • Yes, the Album Artwork screensaver only works with iTunes. If you're looking for an alternative, check out MusaicFM. It works with Spotify or Last.fm.

There's also ScreenSleeves, but it's not free and I'm not sure it works on Catalina.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks for the info but still can't get rid of that particular screen saver. I don't listen to music on my computer anyway
