Safety standards
It's an undeniable fact that, over the past decade, screensavers have gotten a bad reputation. For many years now, the market has been dominated by publishers who bundle their products with (third-party) toolbars, search engine add-ons and replacements, 'security' software, and so forth. Viruses, too, are known to have been attached to screensavers. The unfortunate effect of this trend is that screensavers (and their publishers) now need to be regarded with a high degree of caution, and users need to take precautions to avoid infecting their computers.
How we are different
We will have none of the above here at Screensavers Planet. Our primary goal is to provide a safe haven for everyone, from the expert to the first-timer, to download screensavers with a peace of mind.
Screensavers are thoroughly scanned for viruses, spyware and adware
We use a number of different high-quality anti-virus and anti-spyware tools to perform thorough scans on every single candidate screensaver. Furthermore, we regularly repeat these scans with updated virus definitions to make sure nothing has slipped through in the past. We immediately delete all screensavers that do not pass this test.
Experienced editors review screensavers manually
If a candidate screensaver passes the virus and malware test, it is passed on to one of our experienced editors for review. We carefully go through the installation process on a computer dedicated to this task, taking notes that may prove helpful to our users, and making sure the product does not ask or try to install any bundled software.
Only once it has been tested to work, and deemed safe to download, will a screensaver be published.
We host the screensaver files ourselves
Regular scans of listed screensavers would be pointless if we relied on publishers to have complete control over the files downloaded. For this reason, we serve all downloads of free screensavers from our own servers.
Commercial screensavers may be served from the servers of their respective publishers or an intermediary party, with whom we are affiliated and whose business model is based on selling high-quality screensavers rather than the bundling of software. We nonetheless regularly test their products for compliance with our safety standards.
